Soulmates in Spirit
A Data-Driven Analysis of College Fight Songs
What makes a fight song iconic? We analyzed 65 college fight songs using statistical modeling to uncover hidden patterns in tempo, lyrics, and composition.
The data reveals that some schools, despite being thousands of miles apart, are mathematically perfect matches.
The Musical Landscape (PCA)
The Big Picture: We mapped every fight song into a 2D space based on its "musical DNA."
Schools that appear close together share similar tempos and lyrical structures.
The outliers? They are the schools with truly unique anthems that break the standard mold.
The Secret Formula (Feature Importance)
What drives the match? We reverse-engineered the "recipe" of a conference's sound.
Surprisingly, Spelling the School Name is the most critical ingredient in defining a conference's musical identity, far more than just tempo (BPM) or duration.
Interactive Soulmate Map
The Connections: This map visualizes "Reciprocal Soulmates"- pairs where School A is the single closest statistical match to School B, and vice-versa.
Color Key: Gold lines connect soulmates within the same conference; Crimson lines connect schools across different conferences.

Lyrical Density (The Cliche Meter)
Who relies on tropes? We scored every song from 0 to 9 based on the usage of standard cliches (e.g., "victory," "rah," "colors").
The Big 12 and Big Ten songs tend to be lyrically dense, often checking 4-5 boxes.
In contrast, the SEC and Pac-12 songs are often simpler, focusing on melody over lyrical complexity.
Conference Compatibility Matrix
The Power Couple: When we aggregate the connections, which conferences sound the most alike?
The dark blue square reveals that the Big Ten and SEC share 10 unique soulmate connections—more than any other pair, indicating a shared "traditional football school" sound.
Lyrical Priorities by Conference
Regional Flavors: Different leagues prioritize different lyrics.
The SEC loves the word "Fight," while the Pac-12 prefers to mention school colors.
Notice how the ACC stands out for spelling out their school names more frequently than any other league.
Tempo Evolution (1900–Present)
Faster & Louder: While early songs (pre-1920s) varied wildly in tempo, modern fight songs have converged around a high-energy standard.
The trend line shows a clear increase in speed (BPM) over the last century, reflecting the faster pace of the modern game.
